Games of Thrones star chosen as Grand Marshal to lead St Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin

WINTER is coming to Dublin this March after Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham was announced as Grand Marshal of this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade.

The actor, best known for playing Davos Seaworth in the hit TV show, is a native of East Wall in the city’s Northside.

Cunningham, who recently won an IFTA award for his role in Game of Thrones, was chosen in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Irish acting both at home and internationally.

On receiving the honour of Grand Marshal, Cunningham said: “I have always been a proud Irishman and Dubliner and do my best to represent my country and city when I am abroad working.

“It’s a huge honour to be invited back to lead the parade on our national holiday.

“I’m really looking forward to being a part of it.”

Previous Grand Marshals include Annalise Murphy, Joanne O’Riordan, Katie Taylor, Ronnie Drew, Mícheál ó Muircheartaigh and Packie Bonner.

The parade, one of the high points of the five-day St Patrick's Festival, gets under way at noon on March 17.
