Garda rushed to hospital after being stabbed in west of Ireland

A MAN has been arrested after an elite Garda was stabbed in an attack in Co. Galway.

The incident occurred in the Oranmore area of Galway city at around midday as officers were dealing with an apparent mental health incident.

The Garda, a member of the armed response unit in Salthill, has been brought to Galway University Hospital with what are described as non-life threatening injuries.

It is understood that he was stabbed in the neck and torso.

A suspect was arrested at the scene and is in custody at Mill Street Garda Station in the city.

In a statement, a spokesman for An Garda Síochána said: "Gardai are at the scene of an incident in which a Garda was injured.

"He has since been taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

"A suspect has been arrested in relation to this incident and is currently detained at Mill Street Station."
