Irish man, 27, and female passenger, 24, badly injured after crashing into tree in rural Ireland

A MAN and woman in their 20s are seriously injured in hospital after their car smashed into a tree in a single car collision on a rural road in Ireland.

The crash occurred on the Ballycummin Road, between Ballycummin village and Limerick Golf Club in Co. Limerick, shortly after 4am this morning.

The driver, a 27-year-old male from Ballinacurra Weston, is being treated at University Hospital Limerick's Intensive Care Unit in "critical condition".

His status has been described as "grave".

A 24-year old-woman who was the passenger in the car is being treated at the same hospital.

She is being described as having "serious injuries" following the crash.

A section of Ballycummin Road was closed for several hours after the incident to allow police to carry out a forensic examination and clean-up at the crash scene.

Gardai at Roxboro Road are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic single vehicle road traffic collision.
