Leo Varadkar says Joe Biden will be 'positive for Ireland' and takes veiled swipe at Donald Trump

LEO VARADKAR has suggesting that he wants Joe Biden to win the US election after admitting he thinks he will be positive for Ireland.

He suggested that Biden - whose family has Irish roots - will have a genuine personal attachment to the country beyond "just a golf resort," in an apparent swipe at Donald Trump.

The current (at the time of writing) US president owns a luxury resort in Doonbeg, Co. Clare, and visited a number of times prior to his presidency. Trump used the resort as a base of operations during his official state visit to Ireland in 2019.

Varadkar reportedly made the comments during a Fine Gael party meeting following the Tánaiste's questioning in the Dáil regarding an alleged leak of a confidential government document.

Leo Varadkar took a swipe at Donald Trump, suggesting he had no interest in Ireland beyond his golf resort.

The Fine Gael leader apparently hinted that he was pleased Mr Biden looked set to claim victory in the US election, particularly given the interest the former Vice President has shown in both Brexit and it's impact on Ireland, and indeed what it means for the Good Friday Agreement.

While in the Dáil on Wednesday, Varadkar apologised for "errors of judgement" after he gave a copy of a draft agreement negotiated between the Government and the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) to a friend of his, who is the head of a rival GP group last year.

The former Taoiseach insisted he didn't break any laws, but admitted his actions were "inappropriate".

He reportedly told his fellow members during the subsequent party meeting to be careful who you think your friends are, stressing that politics is getting nastier.

"It was a mess of my making and I shouldn't have dragged you guys into it. Hopefully it's behind us now," Varadkar is reported to have said.
