Marriage referendum bets are on at Paddy Power

PADDY Power has tipped Ireland’s marriage equality referendum as their hottest new bet.

With voters heading to the polls on Friday, May 22, the Irish bookmakers are offering odds of 1/8 on a 'yes' vote coming out on top on the day and 9/2 on a 'no' vote being the preferred choice.

Speaking to The Irish Post at a London Irish Business Society event held last night, Director of Communications Paddy Power said: “It might be surprising but during the last few days the ‘no’s’ are getting much more popular.”

The betting company released a controversial advertising campaign on a billboard in Ireland last month, showing two balaclava-wearing males kissing beside an IRA slogan Tiocfaidh Ar La.

Paddy Power is well known for its provocative betting campaigns and Mr Power explained that taking a "light-hearted approach"  is the philosophy behind the company’s bets.

“As long as the topic’s humorous and not controversial for the sake of it then we’d offer bets,” he said.

“We’re not intending to offend, but we do aim to get a reaction out of people. It’s like the guy at a dinner party who says something inappropriate but everyone takes notice. You want to be that guy."
