RIVERDANCE star Michael Flatley has recorded a single to commemorate the heroes of the Easter Rising.
The Chicago-born Irish dancer narrates the tale of the 1916 Rising in the single The Rising, which was written by Irish songwriter Brian Flanagan.
“The story of the Easter Rising, and the bravery of those that lost their lives fighting for a free Irish republic, has always moved me deeply and inspired me,” Flatley said.
“I really wanted to mark this special centenary for Ireland, and I’m especially proud of the poignant and beautiful tribute that we, as artists together, have created.”
As well as lending his voice to the project, Flatley plays the flute – while Finbarr Furey plays the uileann pipes and the whistles.
And Flatley's renowned quick-tapping Irish dancing shoes also make an appearance on the track, leading to the build up of the song's crux.
The Rising is set to be featured in the upcoming major motion picture of the same name, which stars Irish actors Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Fiona Shaw, Colin Morgan and David O’Hara.
The single is available on iTunes now – with all proceeds going to various charities, including the Michael Flatley Foundation.
