Paddy Jackson attempts to recover legal fees from rape trial

ULSTER and Ireland rugby player Paddy Jackson is attempting to retrieve his legal costs from his rape trial.

Mr Jackson is asking that the defence fees be covered by the Public Prosecution Service, which is funded by the taxpayer.

His legal costs are estimated at more than £100,000.

Mr Jackson was acquitted last month of all charges.

He privately funded his legal defence during the nine-week trial.

Now, his appeal for recovery of legal payments will be heard in court on Friday 18 May at Belfast Crown Court.

It is expected to be held in front of Judge Patricia Smyth, who also oversaw the 42-day rape and sexual assault trial.

Co-accused Stuart Olding was granted legal aid halfway through the trial, as he no longer had sufficient funds to cover the costs.

He was also acquitted of all charges last month.
