Police release chilling CCTV footage of Derry explosion as two more are arrested

POLICE have released footage of a suspected car bomb attack in Derry as it’s confirmed they have arrested two more people.

The three clips hint at just how much devastation could have been caused by the explosion.

The first clip from 7.23pm shows the driver running away from the vehicle, while the second clip from 7.39pm shows a group of young people obliviously walking past the car.

The third clip, taken 30 minutes later at 8.09pm, shows the force of the blast outside the courthouse on Bishop Street shortly after police had started evacuating the area.

'Attempt to kill'

Tonight police confirmed they have arrested two men, aged 34 and 42, in the city this evening.

It follows the arrest of two men aged in their 20s earlier today.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said the bomb was a ‘significant attempt’ to kill people and linked the attack to dissident republicans.

“Fortunately it didn’t kill anybody and fortunately it didn’t cause widespread damage,” he said.

“But clearly it was a very significant attempt to kill people in this community last night.”

He added: “Unfortunately the threat has been at the severe level for nearly 10 years now, so I don’t necessarily see this as an escalation in anybody’s capability.

“I just see this as a continuation of the hatred that the dissident republicans in particular have for this city and the people in it.”
