Republican state senator arrested for possession of child porn and child sex abuse

A STATE SENATOR in Pennsylvania, USA has been charged with having child pornography on this phone according to the state attorney general’s office.

Republican state Sen. Mike Folmer had been in office since 2007 before his resignation on Tuesday amid the aforementioned allegations.

According to a release from Attorney General Josh Shapiro's office, police obtained a search warrant for Folmers's home and on Tuesday night they arrested the 63-year-old after finding images of child porn on his phone.

The investigation began after a tip reported that an individual had uploaded an image of child pornography to the social networking website Tumblr.

Detectives then traced the individual's account to Mr Folmer’s email address and home.

Shapiro confirmed that Folmer was charged with sexual abuse of children and possession of child pornography in the release.

"Michael Folmer stated that he had been dealing with some personal problems/issues and that he had received child pornography through his Tumblr blog," Shapiro said

"I will continue to say it - no one is above the law, no matter what position of power they hold," he added.

"I will continue to work to protect children and hold those who abuse them accountable."

Mr Folmer is considered to be one of the most conservative members of the Pennsylvania chamber, and recently opposed legislation which would have helped victims of historical child sexual abuse sue institutions such as the Catholic Church.

Folmer has yet to release a statement on the charges. Bail was set at $25,000, but it was not immediately clear if Folmer had posted it, according to the attorney general’s office.
