A SYRIAN man and his Iraqi companion were subjected to a sickening beating at the hands of a group of thugs in Dublin last weekend.
The Irish Times is reporting that the two men, named only as Jamal and Mohammed, were attacked on Pearse Street last weekend by a group of males who appeared to take umbrage with the pair speaking Arabic.
The two men were cycling home and had stopped at a set of traffic when a man standing nearby heard them conversing in a foreign language and decided to intervene.
Rushing over to the two men, the unnamed assailant proceeded to push Jamal off his bike. Two other men arrived on the scene and, initially at least, appeared intent on making peace.
However, seconds later, their offer of a handshake turned into something more sinister with one of the men punching the already perturbed Mohammed in the face.
A fight broke out, with Mohammed and Jamal coming off worse against the trio of agitators.
"I fell to the ground and two of the guys started kicking me in the head," Mohammed told the Irish Times.
"I ended up unconscious for a few seconds."
According to the report, the men made a hasty getaway soon after with one heard shouting “we beat up Jesus” in reference to Mohammed’s hair.
While Mohammed only suffered bruises, Jamal was left with a fractured nose and required stitches for a cut over his left eyebrow.
The pair have filed a report with gardaí and intend to press charges with one local resident already coming forward with video footage of the incident.
However, details of the attack makes for concerning reading, coming just days after a Chinese woman was filmed being pushed in Dublin’s Royal Canal.
Xuedan (Shelly) Xiong was the victim of racist taunts and intimidation while walking along the canal over the weekend.
Despite a concerted campaign to bring her attackers to just, none of the youths involved in the incident have yet been charged.
