Town in shock after man shot dead in Co. Down last night

LOCALS in Warrenpoint are in shock after a man was shot dead in the Co. Down town on Friday night.

As detectives launched a murder investigation, they confirmed the victim was 37-year-old Wayne Boylan.

A 21-year-old woman who was also injured in the shooting remains in a critical condition in hospital.

She was initially taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry before being transferred to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital.

'Stunned'

Sinn Féin MLA Sinéad Ennis said the murder had left the local community in shock.

“The community of Warrenpoint are shocked and stunned by this news,” she said.

“Our first thoughts are with the family of the victim.

“The PSNI have the area sealed off and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to assist the investigation.”

Appeal

The incident occurred on the Lower Dromore Road at around 7.30pm last night when two men entered a property and opened fire.

Detectives are still working to establish a motive and have appealed for witnesses.

“I would particularly like to hear from anyone who was in the area last night and who may have seen two men or any vehicles fleeing from the scene immediately after the shooting,” said Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Boyce of the PSNI.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101.
