Tragedy as 11-year-old Irish girl dies after being hit by van while riding her bike

AN ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl has sadly died after she was hit by a van while cycling outside her home in Co. Kerry.

She was rushed to hospital immediately after the collision, which happened on Monday evening, but later died from her injuries.

A man in his 50s, who was driving the van, was taken to Tralee University Hospital to be treated for injuries.

In a statement, gardaí said they are "investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred 3km outside Abbeydorner, Tralee, Co. Kerry on Monday evening 10th May, 2021 at approximately 7.30pm.

"A female pedal cyclist and a van were involved in the collision. The pedal cyclist, a female aged 11 years, was seriously injured during the collision.

"She was taken to Tralee University Hospital where she later passed away. The driver of the van, man in his 50s, was removed to Tralee University Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

"The road remains closed as a technical examination of the scene is being conducted by Garda Forensic Investigators. Local diversions are in place."

Gardaí say they are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward, and any road users who were travelling nearby with dashcam footage have been to asked to make it available.
