‘Unimaginable tragedy’ – tributes paid to father-of-three who died in workplace incident

TRIBUTES have been paid to the father-of-three who died in a workplace incident in Co. Fermanagh on Friday.

Barry McQuaid, aged 34, from Dromore in Co. Tyrone, was described as a popular and highly-respected local man.

Mr McQuaid died following an incident at a work site in Ederney on Friday morning.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland is investigating the incident.

West Tyrone Sinn Féin Councillor Glenn Campbell said people have been left shocked following the death.

“People in Dromore, Trillick and across West Tyrone are shocked and saddened by the death of popular local man, Barry McQuaid, following a tragic accident at work,” said Cllr Campbell.

“It’s such a shock to the community and an awful tragedy for any family to come to terms with.

“Barry was a very hard-working, conscientious young man who was meticulous in everything he did.

'Support'

He was well known and highly respected locally. He had a bright future ahead of him and people are struggling to come to terms with the news of his tragic death.”

Mr McQuaid’s children are believed to range in age from 14 months to seven years.

Cllr Campbell said the community would rally round to support the family.

“Words fail us all when faced with such an unimaginable tragedy,” he said, “but Dromore is a strong and supportive community, and people will rally round to help and support the family at this sad and difficult time.

“On behalf of the local community I’d like to extend sincere condolences to Barry’s wife and family, his parents, grandmother, wider family circle and his many friends, who have been devastated by his untimely death.”

Fr Patrick McEntee from St Davog's Catholic Church also paid tribute to Mr McQuaid.

He told the BBC: “Barry was a very well-respected, likeable fellow, very enterprising.

“He was involved in doing a lot for himself and others, a very reliable young man.”
