Eddie Brennan believes that that Brian Cody and Henry Shefflin's handshake issue is 'disappointing thing to see'

A FORMER KILKENNY player believes the debacle around Brian Cody and Henry Shefflin's handshake issue is 'disappointing to see'.

The Leinster hurling final was won by Cody's cat's with the score reading Galway 0-17 Kilkenny 0-22 after the final whistle.

Kilkenny secured a third provincial title in a row and everyone expected Galway-manager Shefflin and current Kilkenny-manager Cody to share an exchange of goodwill after the game, but after a brief handshake and a few words it was clear that Shefflin wasn't happy with his former manager's conduct.

Eddie Brennan, who won eight All-Ireland titles alongside the pair, felt it was a chance to kill the story in its tracks.

Speaking to RTÉ at the launch of Guinness 0.0's new GAA campaign, Brennan said: "It was a glorious opportunity there to kill the whole story and my only view on it is that it's just a disappointing thing to see," said the eight-time Kilkenny All-Ireland SHC winner

"I'm not privy to all the information to make an informed assessment of it, because I don't know what's gone on, but I just think, from a Kilkenny perspective, if there's a hand-shake there, straight after the final whistle, I think it puts it to bed, kills the whole episode. Whereas now, it's probably just a thing unfortunately and that's just sad to see.

"It's just part of the game, the players do it and everyone else does it and it's not something I'd ever put too much thought into. There were occasions I'd worry when I was playing did I shake hands with this lad or did I forget.

"But yeah, it's just disappointing to see that and Saturday night just wasn't good. I think there was an opportunity there to bury it for once and for all."
