Everton's James McCarthy targeted by Manchester United and Tottenham

IRELAND midfielder James McCarthy is reportedly been tracked by Manchester United and Tottenham as both club’s prepare to test Everton’s will to hold on to the midfielder.

McCarthy only joined Everton last summer, following manager Roberto Martinez to Goodison Park from Wigan in a deal worth £13 million.

After a fine debut season for the Toffees, Everton now rate the 23-year-old at £25 million and are keen to open talks with him over a new deal.

However, Goal.com reports that both United and Spurs are hoping to take him off the Toffees’ hands after just one season.

McCarthy was a target for former United manager David Moyes but new boss Louis van Gaal has reportedly approved a move for the midfielder, while Mauricio Pochettino is also hoping to bring the Ireland international to White Hart Lane. Arsenal could also join the chase for the midfielder.

McCarthy became a key performer for Everton last season as they secured a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

He is likely to be a key member of Martin O’Neill’s Ireland team when they kick off their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign next month.
