Irish Abroad: Hendrick's fine form sends Derby to third round of Capital One Cup

The Irish Post looks at how Irish players got on in the Tuesday’s night’s soccer action:

Capital One Cup

Ireland international Stephen Ward made his debut for Burnley against Sheffield Wednesday, but he could not prevent the 0 -1 score line that knocked his newly promoted side out of the competition.

Derby County beat Charlton Athletic to move into the third round, with a fine performance from Jeff Hendrick. He came close in the first half to seal a goal for the home side, but it was Derby substitute Ivan Calero who scored the winner.

Neil Kilkenny picked up a yellow card in Preston’s 3 – 1 away defeat by Middlesborough. The visitors gave a determined performance but the former U19 Irish international could not prevent Preston’s exit.

New Saints man Shane Long started for Southampton in their 2 – 0 victory over hosts Milwall, playing for almost the entire tie before being substituted in the 91st minute.

Northern Ireland international Michael O’Connor netted  Port Vale’s first goal in their 2 – 3 loss against Cardiff City, who produced a sensational long-range shot from a free-kick.

Champions League

Celtic exited the Champions League with a 0-1 home defeat by NK Maribor, despite being favourites to proceed to the group stages following last week’s comeback to secure a 1-1 draw.

Anthony Stokes set up what could have been a goal for the hosts, but Van Dijk headed wide from the corner.
