Katie Taylor eliminated from Rio 2016 after quarter-final defeat

IRELAND’S Katie Taylor has been knocked out of the women’s 60kg competition in Rio following defeat at the quarter-final stage.

According to the judges, the Wicklow native was ever so slightly out-boxed by Finland’s Mira Potkonen in her opening bout of the Games.

Beaten semi-finalists are awarded bronze so the Bray bomber would have been guaranteed a medal with a victory.

Taylor, the defending champion having taken gold in London 2012, took the opening round after displaying superior foot-work, but her Finnish opponent worked out her movement in the second and earned the approval of the judges thereafter.

The third and fourth rounds were barnstormers with neither fighter leaving anything to chance, and it made for great viewing, but Taylor was deemed to have been beaten to the punch by one of the judges in the third, which ultimately proved crucial.

Taylor had fought 35-year-old Potkonen a number of times over the years and never lost, but the defeat is her third of 2016.
