Rory McIlroy hits his own dad with wayward shot at The Masters

IT WAS a day to forget for Rory McIlroy at The Masters.

The Masters got underway on Thursday, and Rory McIlroy did not get off to the greatest of starts.

And this was BEFORE he managed to hit his own father in the leg with a wayward shot...

McIlroy was already two over par when at the seventh hole, where he took a wild shot, and it bounced and caught his father on the back of the leg.

"I knew it was my dad when I was aiming at him," said McIlroy. "Probably 30 seconds before it hit him."

His caddy was shocked, and could be heard saying: "That was your dad you hit?"

Fair play to his dad, he took it like a champ, because that really could have hurt...

While it wasn't the best start for McIlroy at all, Irishman Shane Lowry is definitely still in the mix after Day 1.

Lowry, who is playing with Justin Rose, overcame a couple of mistakes and birdied the last to shoot a 1-under.

The Offaly man now sits tied for eighth, as one of only 12 players to break par on a the Augusta course.

The action continues today and tomorrow, while it will draw to a close on Sunday evening.

Here's hoping we have an Irishman involved when it comes down to crunch time.
