Donegal Airport among the world's most scenic landings

AN IRISH airport has been voted as one of the world’s most scenic airport approaches.

Donegal Airport was ranked in the top 10 in a global poll of travel experts and fans, out of 115 different airports around the world.

Thousands of people voted on a shortlist that was chosen by a panel of experts – with Malta International Airport topping the list.

The survey – conducted by private jet booking service PrivateFly – ranked seventh-placed Donegal Airport ahead of London City, Los Angeles LAX and St Maarten in the Caribbean.

Voters said of Donegal Airport: "You arrive in the Emerald Isle adjacent to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world; Carrickfinn with a backdrop of the majestic Mount Errigal on one side and an array of craggy islands on the other. Though clear turquoise blue sea is just a bonus on a sunny day."

The airport was opened in 1986, having replaced the green runway with tarmac, with a new terminal built in the 1990s.
