Rory McIlroy among Britain's most generous celebrities

RORY McIlroy is among Britain’s most generous celebrities, donating £1million of his fortune to charities last year.

The Northern Irish golfer was revealed to be in the Sunday Times top ten list alongside boyband One Direction, Coldplay and David Beckham.

McIlroy placed eighth in the rankings, having donated £780,000 to his Rory Foundation – which aims to better the lives of vulnerable children - while also pledging £250,000 to Mencap.

Topping the list as the most giving celebrities are Sir Elton John and JK Rowling.

The English songwriter gave £26.8million to charity in 2015 – largely his Aids foundations in Britain and the US, while Rowling donated £10.3million to her charity the Lumos Foundation and the Volant Charitable Trust.

The list revealed that the wealthy had given £2.66million to charity last year – with the full British and Irish lists being released next Sunday.
