Birmingham burial costs trump Belfast prices

THE cost of dying in Birmingham is almost three times more expensive than in Belfast, according to new figures.

Topping the list, the average price of a burial plot in the West Midlands city costs £2,815; research obtained from councils across major British cities shows.

The Post Office Money Funeral Planning study found that the nationwide average cost of a burial plot is £1,841.

In Belfast, the cost of dying remains below average, at £980 for a burial plot.

Nick Kennett, director of financial services at Post Office Money, said that rising costs are a concern for those who have not planned ahead.

“The cost of burial sites is likely to continue to rise as time goes on and the cost of land itself increases,” he said.

“This is particularly concerning as 70 per cent of adults in the UK currently have made no financial provision for their funeral.”
