Body found in Sligo confirmed as 'popular' local man, 43, who went missing at Christmas

THE body of a man found in Co. Sligo at the weekend has been identified as Michael McGowan, who had not been seen since last Christmas.

Mr McGowan's remains were recovered at Coney Island on Saturday, June 9.

The popular 43-year-old was reported missing on December 30, 2017 from his home in Sligo.

He had last been seen five days earlier on Christmas Day.

Searches were conducted by local people as well as Gardaí, Civil Defence, RNLI and the Coastguard in the wake of Mr McGowan's disappearance but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Gardaí confirmed this afternoon that the remains belonged to the bachelor, who lived near to where his body was found.

A file will now be prepared for the coroner.
