Dr Tony Holohan says it's safe for Santa to deliver toys this Christmas

IRELAND's Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has announced that it's safe enough for Santa to travel around the world delivering toys this Christmas, in spite of Covid-19 concerns.

Speaking at a health briefing on Monday evening about the coronavirus pandemic, Dr Holohan said, that just like everyone else in Ireland, it's safe for Santa to travel around over the Christmas period.

While he stressed that Santa was going to be very cautious and remain socially distanced at all times, he assured kids that Old Saint Nick will be able to get all of his presents delivered as normal.

"Santa is planning ahead just like the rest of us to make sure that this is as safe a Christmas as possible," Holohan said.

"From our point of view, we know that he will take all of the necessary measures and it'll be safe for Santa to come and visit the houses of children who are good, and those who are doing their homework and helping around the house and not fighting with their brothers and sisters.

"So the important thing for kids, now, to do is to do their preparations, write their letters, and keeping doing their homework, and Santa can come."

Earlier this month, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney told the Dáil that Santa qualifies as an essential worker, and even if travel restrictions were to be imposed, he'd still be able to get around without any fuss.

Children have been advised not to stay up to see him though, in order to adhere with social distancing guidelines.
