Four men arrested after several people stabbed at funeral in Northern Ireland

POLICE have arrested four men in connection with a stabbing incident which occurred at a funeral ceremony in County Armagh on Monday.

The “prolonged altercation” involving a number of people occurred at around 3pm in St Coleman’s graveyard on the North Circular Road in Lurgan, according to the PSNI.

Three injured people were taken to Craigavon Area Hospital following stabbing incidents, with injuries described as non-life threatening.

Chief Inspector Bernard O'Connor said: "Police had worked closely with the bereaved family involved to ensure that the funeral service and interment passed off without incident.

“The disturbance that followed the burial was senseless and put the safety of all the mourners at risk.

“It was also deeply upsetting for the grieving family. Police acted swiftly to keep people safe and take those involved off the street."

Yesterday, police arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
