Gardaí appeal for help to find men wanted over murder of Garda Jerry McCabe 22 years on

Gardaí have made a fresh appeal for information about the whereabouts of two men wanted over the murder of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe 22 years ago.

Det Gda McCabe was shot dead as he and a colleague escorted a cash and mail van in Adare, Co. Limerick on the morning of June 7, 1996.

The Kerry native and his partner, Det Gda Ben O'Sullivan, were targeted in a hail of automatic gunfire as both officers provided an armed escort for the van at 6.55am.

Det Gda McCabe died instantly when a bullet fired from an AK-47 assault rifle severed his spine as he sat in the Garda patrol car.

Det Gda O'Sullivan was shot 11 times, but miraculously survived.

Four IRA gang members were convicted of Det Gda McCabe's manslaughter but Gardaí want to speak to two men they suspect were also involved.

The father of five was posthumously awarded the Freedom of Limerick last night.

His partner Det Gda O'Sullivan, who is now retired, was also awarded the honour.
