GARDAÍ have arrested an armed fugitive who forced his way into a house and assaulted a man after crashing two hijacked cars in Dublin this morning.

The man, a 37-year-old from Tallaght, is suspected of carjacking two motorists in Jobstown before assaulting another man at his home to steal a third car.

He was arrested by Armed Support Unit officers at around 2.20pm this afternoon outside Dunnes Stores at CityWest Shopping Centre in west Dublin.

The bloodied man was brought to Tallaght Garda Station for questioning and a firearm has been recovered by Gardaí.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí investigating a number of incident in the Tallaght area this morning have arrested a male in his 30’s.

“The male was arrested this afternoon in the CityWest area and is currently detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 at Tallaght Garda Station.

“A firearm (pending technical examination) has also been recovered by Gardaí.”

The manhunt was launched this morning shortly after 6am when Gardaí received reports that a man armed with a machine gun had hijacked several vehicles in the Irish capital.

Officers asked the public to be on the lookout for a Renualt Kadjar with the registration plate 162 D 8767

A Garda spokesperson said earlier: “Gardaí are trying to locate a black Renault Kadjar registered number.

“The driver of this car is believed to be armed and is described as a white male, medium build, wearing grey shorts, a green and black Northface jacket and grey and navy runners.

“The public are asked not to approach the man, but should contact Gardaí at Tallaght Garda Station on 01 666 6000 or the emergency numbers 999 or 112.”
