Irish pensioner dies following car crash in Cork

AN ELDERLY Irish man has sadly died following a late-night collision in Co. Cork.

The accident is believed to have only involved the one car, and happened in the Kilbonane area of Aherla.

A man thought to be in his 80s was found dead at the scene, though it's not known exactly what time the accident occurred.

The body was taken to Cork University Hospital where it will undergo a post mortem exam.

The scene of the collision has been cordoned off by gardai members and an investigation into the incident is still on going.

The road where the accident happened was closed for most of Tuesday morning and afternoon but it's thought it will be reopened on Wednesday.

Gardai are now appealing for anyone with any information or dash cam footage from the area to contact them.

A garda spokesman said: "A man in his 80s was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.

"The road remains closed this morning for a forensic examination.

"Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users who travelled in the area between 9pm on 16/12/19 - 2:30am on 17/12/19 who may have dash cam footage, to contact Gardaí in Macroom on 026 20590 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111."
