Irish postman in hospital after thug robs van and dumps mail in river

AN IRISH postal worker was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after a "mindless" thug robbed his van and dumped the mail in a river.

The incident happened at around 12.50pm in Tallaght, south Dublin.

The An Post worker, a man in his 40s, was delivering a package in the area, and after briefly leaving his van unattended, he realised a hooligan had jumped into the front seat and was trying to drive away.

In an effort to stop the theft, the postman sustained injuries that left him in hospital.

After escaping, the thief then ditched the van and dumped dozens upon dozens of parcels and letters in a nearby river.

A garda spokesman said: "No arrests have been made to date."

The An Post worker was taken to Tallaght hospital for treatment, but has since been released.

On a Tallaght residents' Facebook page, a local warned: "Hope nobody is waiting for post/packages around Jobstown, because someone's after robbing the post van and your mail is spread across the river and in the field at Kilclare."

In response, irate residents hit out at the awful incident with one person saying: "Can these cretins sink any lower? Unreal."
