Irishman, 25, previously jailed for walking around with replica AK-47 admits raping Spanish student in Dublin

A MAN previously convicted of walking around in public with an imitation assault rifle has admitted raping a Spanish woman in south Dublin last year.

Eoin Berkeley, 25, of Hamptonwood Way in Finglas, was arrested on July 17 last year after a young Spanish student came forward claiming she'd been raped repeatedly inside a tent at the former Irish Glass Bottle site on Pigeon House Road, Ringsend.

Berkeley was due to stand trial in November but pleaded guilty to three charges of rape at the Central Criminal Court this morning.

His sentence hearing will take place in October and arrangements will be made for the victim to come to Ireland for the hearing should she wish to.

Last February, Berkeley was cleared of scribbling homophobic slurs and swastikas on a gay bar, The George, in Dublin city centre.

And only last month, the 25-year-old was jailed for two-and-a-half years for walking around Santry and an area near Dublin Airport with a replica AK-47 rifle.

Defence Counsel Michael Bowman said his client had psychiatric issues which would need to be addressed by the court.

The judge said he would decide the issue in October.
