PSNI Ombudsman investigating the death of man in police custody

A 26-year-old man died in custody of the PSNI.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances under which a man has died in Musgrave police station in Belfast, County Antrim.

The man died in the early hours of Monday morning following an arrest which took place on Sunday evening.

The man received treatment for his injuries but died in the station, commencing an investigation by the PSNI Ombudsman.

Speaking to RTÉ  a spokesperson for the PSNI appealed for information: "A police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance is underway and Detective Inspector Stephen Harvey would ask anyone with any information which could assist detectives with their inquiries to contact them at Musgrave police station on 101."

The spokesperson added that the deceased passed away in police custody following receiving medical treatment.

"As is normal procedure, the office of the Police Ombudsman has been informed of the matter and has begun an investigation," he said.

"As PONI are investigating, it would be inappropriate to comment any further."
