Tragedy as man, 70s, dies in road traffic accident in Leitrim

AN ELDERLY man has died following a road traffic accident in County Leitrim.

Gardaí have confirmed that the man, aged in his 70s, tragically lost his life in an accident yesterday morning, Tuesday 15 December.

The incident occurred in the Killaneen area in Ballinamore, County Leitrim, and the elderly gentleman was the driver and the sole occupant of the car.

The single-vehicle crash did not involve any other cars on the road.

Gardai are working to determine the cause of the accident

Emergency services were alerted to the crash at around 11am yesterday morning, and the man was transported to Cavan General Hospital via ambulance.

However he had suffered serious injuries, and medical personnel were unable to save his life. A post-mortem is due to take place in the coming days.

Forensic Collision Investigators were present at the scene yesterday afternoon, and the road was closed to vehicles as detectives worked to determine the cause of the crash.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, particularly any road users who may have dash-cam footage of the incident, to come forward.
