American co-commentator blames Rory McIlroy's Open failure on his 'muscles'

TWO-TIME Major winner Johnny Miller believes Rory McIlroy has spent too much time beefing up in the gym.

McIlroy finished in the top five at The Open on Sunday as Sweden’s Henrik Stenson triumphed to win his first ever Major at Royal Troon.

McIlroy, the 2014 Claret Jug winner from Co. Down, shot a solid first two rounds of 69 and 71 to enter the weekend on three-under par – seven shots behind the leader.

However, an unravelling two-over 73 on Saturday put McIlroy out of contention before he rallied on the final day to shoot an impressive round of 67 to finish tied for fifth on four-under par.

Miller, the 1976 Open winner who now co-commentates on NBC’s golf coverage in America, blamed McIlroy’s failure to compete for the Major on his new-look physique.

"I think he overdid the weight room, personally," said the American, who compared McIlroy’s appearance to that of Tiger Woods, whose game deteriorated after he began to body build.

"I don't think that helped him at all,” added Miller. “Same thing with Tiger Woods. You just get carried away with wearing the tight shirts and showing off their, sort of, muscles."
