RTE's Claire Byrne insults Roy Keane fans with 'disrespectful' bit on his Sky Sports career

THE IRISH public have got a feud that they never knew they needed. RTE's Claire Byrne and her studio guests have angered Former Ireland and Manchester United captain Roy Keane's array of fans. The broadcaster on her show appeared to treat Roy as a bit of a social media side-show.

The debate started when a video clip of Roy, who was signing autographs, gave a stick back to a Manchester United fan outside Old Trafford, who jeered at him was aired.

Keane with no PR and social media constrictions around him gave him the fan a sharp retort that he had become famous for during his playing career.

The segment however focused on Roy's career around fame and social media, as Keane has become one of Sky's most outspoken pundits. People (or some) felt it painted Roy as a bit of a hypocrite.

Playwright and broadcaster Fiona Looney, highlighted the "irony" that the famously camera-shy Corkman was now a TV star.

She said: "The terrible irony of it, the beautiful irony, is that Roy Keane would be disgusted that this is now his job."

"When he started doing this he famously was asked to do one game for Sky Sports in about 2005, and he hated it so much that he compared it to going to the dentist, and he kept saying never again. And now look."

And Claire asked Fiona about the rumors that Keane might join I'm A Celeb this year.

She added: "I love this, every year at this time of year the odds of Roy Keane going into the jungle, or the Welsh castle as it is this year, they absolutely plummet in the week beforehand.

"It has become almost like who is going to become the next James Bond, is Roy going to go into the jungle?

"I can't see it, but the very fact that people even have the conversation shows that he is absolutely at the top of the producers' wish list now to get him in there, and who wouldn't watch that?"

Not every viewer was impressed by the showbiz line of questioning, with one social media user saying Keane

"Why are these two trying to give a psychoanalysis on Roy Keane? Fucking hell...
