CRAIG Young took five wickets on his one-day international debut as Ireland beat Scotland by seven wickets at Malahide in the first of three one-day internationals.
Captain Kevin O'Brien helped the home side secure victory by top-scoring with an unbeaten 56 (7 fours, 1 six) with 13 overs remaining, with Scotland dismissed for 172 all out.
Ireland opener Andrew Balbirnie scored 38 and Stuart Thompson finished on 35 not out.
The Scots had a troubled start to the game, losing Matty Cross for nine runs after he edged Max Sorensen's delivery to wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter.
Michael Leask helped the visitors’ attempts to recover with a score of 50 after they fell to 101-7.
Ireland captain William Porterfield was absent from the first of the three match series, along with experienced players Ed Joyce, Niall O'Brien, Gary Wilson and Tim Murtagh who are on county duty, so the younger players were handed the opportunity to perform.
Derry bowler Young, 24, said: "The team result is always most important, but individual performances matter because there is a big carrot which people are trying to grab.
"It is always nice to get five wickets. It is a nice start to the series and it was a good win for the team."
Young took Calum MacLeod (25) and Hamish Gardiner (10) in quick succession, before taking his third Preston Mommsen (10) to leave the Scots at 62-4.
Leask was the next to fall, followed finally by Safyaan Sharif (18), ending Scotland's hopes of recording a competitive score.
The sides will meet again on Wednesday and Friday at the same venue.
