Sandwell Irish Society ready for St Pat’s Day celebration

A PACKED day’s programme to mark St Patrick’s Day at the Sandwell Irish Society in West Bromwich takes place tomorrow (March 16).

The Society’s 11th St Patrick’s Celebration at the Public, New Street, runs from 10am until 3pm.

The event – which includes five hours of traditional Irish music, song, dance and poetry – extends an Irish welcome to other communities, who will also perform.

Event Manager Siobhan Gorman said: “The Public is an iconic community arts building in the centre of West Bromwich.

"Our event is maybe smaller than some of those in the bigger cities around the UK but we like to think that it is friendlier, more intimate and enjoys the benefits of an abundance of grassroots community spirit.”

Birmingham Irish Pipes and Drums and The Hurling Boys are two performers in a busy programme of traditional Irish acts throughout the day.

The family-friendly day will feature over 250 pupils from 16 local schools, who have been preparing for weeks through a range of traditional Irish dance and cultural activities. The free celebration will include Irish language workshops, arts and craft workshops, face painting and Irish food tasting.

“You will be assured of a ‘Céad Mile Fáilte’ – a hundred thousand welcomes – Sandwell Irish and Black Country style!” Mrs Gorman added.
