LIFE in the Womb, an Irish app built in Dublin is up for a prestigious Webby award.
Launched in October last year, the iPad app allows expectant parents to follow their baby’s journey from conception to birth using cutting edge illustration, animations and interactive 3D features.
The clever visual guide shows the week-by-week progress of a baby’s development as well as insights into how a baby experiences seeing, tasting, hearing and kicking during the 40 weeks of pregnancy as well as info-graphics explaining checks, scans and showing 3D rotations of the baby at key stages of development.
The app was developed by The Science Picture Company, a leading digital illustration and animation studio specialising in science, in collaboration with Redwind Software and The National Maternity Hospital.
Michael Grant, co-founder of The Science Picture Company said “This app has brought together an amazing team of artists, programmers, doctors and writers to create what we believe is an entirely new experience for expectant parents”.
The Irish app faces tough competition in the Mobile & Apps: Education & Reference category from a TED app which is the current front runner. Life in the Womb is currently in second place in its category with 21% of the vote.
The Webby Awards, established in 1996 during the Web's infancy, is one of the biggest and best known awards honouring excellence on the Internet.
A total of 360,000 online votes have already been cast so far. Voting closes in 10 days and winners will be announced on 29 April.
The Life in the Womb App is available from the App Store on iPad or on iTunes.
