Irish pub named best in London

AN IRISH pub has been named the top London watering hole.

The Blythe Hill Tavern on Stanstead Road in Forrest Hill took the title, after impressing judges from the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood (SPBW).

The pub’s landlord, Con Riordan from Limerick, is thrilled with the win.

“It's the quality of the real ale, and the quality of the service,” he said, when asked why he thought his pub came out on top.

Mr Riordan has been running the Blythe Hill Tavern for 27 years and his commitment to providing excellent service has paid off.

In the past, the pub has almost taken the title of London’s best boozer – but this year the award will make its way to Forrest Hill at last.

The SPBW was set up by seven dissatisfied beer drinkers over 50 years ago, who were tired of the decline in both the quality of ale and service at the time.

In an effort to encourage landlords around Britain to pull up their socks, they set up the award to commend those who are passionate about their work.

The award will be presented to Mr Riordan and his staff on January 28.
