Man arrested after over €120,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis seized in Roscommon

A TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court in connection with the possession of cocaine and cannabis – worth an estimated €120,000 – that was seized during a gardaí search operation in Co Roscommon.

Kamil Piotrk, from Greenfields, Blackstick Road, Roscommon, was charged with 12 counts of possession and intent to sell or supply the narcotics when he appeared before Judge James Faughnan at a special sitting of Castlerea District Court on Sunday evening.

Evidence of his arrest, charge and caution was provided to the court by Garda Mick Fox.

Inspector David Cryan, representing Gardai interests in the case, asked the judge to remand Mr Piotrk in custody at Castlerea Prison until Friday 5 March and Judge Faughnan ruled in favour of this request.

Mr Piotrik will appear again in Harristown Court in Castlerea on Friday.

Under Section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act, harsh punishments can be meted out to serious drug offenders.

Anyone found to be in possession of over €13k worth of illegal narcotics is, if convicted, liable to face a minimum term of 10 years in prison – though such sentences are rarely ever handed out.
