Search for missing swimmer off west coast of Ireland resumes this morning

A MAJOR search operation resumes this morning for a missing swimmer off the coast of County Galway.

The swimmer was reported missing around 5 pm yesterday afternoon off the coast of Salthill.

A search began yesterday evening which included an aerial survey carried out by a Coast Guard rescue helicopter.

Sea-based searches were also carried out by volunteers from the Galway-based RNLI lifeboat.

It is understood the missing swimmer is a 40-year-old man from the Galway area.

It is also reported that the crew of a local pilot boat called ‘Kerry Head’ met one swimmer on the water who didn’t appear to be in difficulty.

Coastguard units based at Costelloe Bay will resume the search of waters off Salthill at 9 am this morning.

The Rescue 115 helicopter from Shannon will search the areas around Blackrock and inner Galway Bay when tides are low to try to locate the missing swimmer.
