Body of teenage girl found in park, murder investigation launched

THE body of a teenage girl has been discovered in a park close to a city centre, prompting a murder investigation.

The victim, who has not yet been named, was found unresponsive by a member of the public at West Park in Wolverhampton at around 7am this morning.

Nothing could be done to save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene, West Midlands Police said.

The force added that no arrests had yet been made in connection with the death and the victim's family were being supported by specialist officers.

The coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

West Park remained cordoned off by police this afternoon while investigations took place.

Det Ch Insp Edward Foster said: "The investigation is at an early stage, but we're really keen to hear from anyone who was in or around the park overnight.

"It's vital that we speak to anyone with information, no matter how small it may be."

Sup Int Harvi Khatkar added: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the young girl at this terrible time.

"We fully understand that people will be really concerned about what has happened, but we have a dedicated team of detectives working on the investigation.

"Extra patrols will be taking place in the area and I'd encourage anyone with concerns to speak to their local officers."
