Broadway street named after Irish dancing star Michael Flatley

IRISH DANCING superstar Michael Flatley's debut on Broadway has been made that bit more special – as a New York street was named after him.

Temporarily dubbed ‘Flatley Way’, a section of Broadway was named in his honour in Manhattan to celebrate his first ever appearance there.

Despite being one of the most prolific dancers in the world, with a net worth of more than $300m, Flatley has never danced on Broadway.

But he will appear on the famous New York stage for a string of shows between now and January, when he will hang up his dancing shoes for good.

And to celebrate this honour, New York has renamed a section of Broadway as Flatley Way for the duration of his show’s run.

At the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, Flatley said it was “fantastic” to finally appear on Broadway.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said.

Flatley, 57, has suffered from dance-related injuries for years but vows this will not get in the way of an enthusiastic Broadway show.

“My legs are in bits right now, but I’ll tell you one thing — when I’m on that Broadway stage I’ll be dancing like I’m a teenager,” he said.

Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games is showing at the Lyric Theatre in New York City until January 3.
