Gardaí investigating after elderly woman's body discovered in Kilkenny

AN GARDA Síochána have launched an investigation following the discovery of a body in Kilkenny.

Gardaí have today confirmed that they are investigating all circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of a woman, believed to be aged in her 70's ,whose body was discovered in a house in Kilkenny City yesterday evening, March 25.

Gardaí were called to the house on Maudlin Street in the city centre at approximately 6pm.

The scene has been preserved and the woman's body remains at the scene pending an examination of the area by the Garda Technical Bureau. A post-mortem will also be performed on the woman's remains at this time.

An unnamed male has been arrested and is currently being detained in Kilkenny Garda Station for questioning in relation to the incident following the discovery.

No further details are available at this time, and Gardaí have said they will be making no further comment, but have confirmed that they are "investigating all circumstances" surrounding the woman's death.

The Irish Times report that Gardaí believe the elderly woman may have been dead for some time before her body was discovered at the house.

The nature of her death will become clear following the completion of the post-mortem examination.
