Man arrested for dousing Gardaí in petrol and trying to light fire in Garda station

A MAN has been arrested after trying to set 'a number of Garda officers' on fire in a station in County Kildare.

The terrifying incident occurred in Newbridge Garda Station in County Kildare yesterday evening, Monday 10 May at around 9pm.

A man, whose name has not been released, entered the station and approached officers present, before producing a flammable liquid believed to be petrol, a statement from Gardaí confirmed.

An unnamed suspect entered Newbride Garda Station and attempted to set both himself and officers on fire by dousing them in a flammable liquid, a statement from the force confirmed.

The suspect doused himself, a number of Gardaí and parts of the station in the liquid and attempted to start a fire.

Garda officers restrained the man before he was able to light the flammable liquid and arrested him before the fire could be lit; he was arrested and detained, and no physical injuries have been reported.

It is unclear what motive, if any, the suspect had in attempting to light the fire.

The suspect is currently undergoing a medical assessment at a local hospital and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice act, according to The Journal.

Investigations into the attempted attack are ongoing.
