Manhunt launched after young German student raped while walking home in Dublin

GARDAÍ have launched an investigation after a young woman was raped in Dublin city centre at the weekend.

The alleged attack took place in a lane off Winetavern Street, close to Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin 2, at around 3.30am on Sunday morning.

The victim, a German student in her 20s, had been out socialising at a nearby pub shortly before the assault.

After leaving her friends and walking back to the Christchurch area she met a man who walked with her before attacking her.

The woman raised the alarm and called 999 after the man fled.

Gardaí arrived and assisted the victim at the scene before she was brought to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at the Rotunda Hospital.

She returned to her family in Germany shortly after giving a statement to detectives, according to RTÉ News.

Gardaí at Kevin Street Garda Station are examining CCTV of the area from the early hours of Sunday.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating an alleged sexual assault of a female.

"The incident occurred on the 2nd December 2018 in Dublin 2. Investigations are ongoing."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Kevin Street Garda Station on 01 666 9400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
