Paul Mescal's 'I'm Irish' post is Ireland's most liked tweet of 2020

IRISH ACTOR Paul Mescal has officially had Ireland's most 'liked' tweet of the year.

The Kildare-native, who rose to prominence following his breakout performance as Connell in Normal People, saw a tweet of his go viral after being nominated for an Emmy back in July.

After a number of UK news outlets mistakenly labelled him British, the 24-year-old simply wrote: "I'm Irish".

It racked up over 130,000 likes and has been officially named Ireland's most 'liked' tweet of 2020.

On Tuesday, the social media giant released their annual 'Year on Twitter' report.

It showed that Dr Tony Holohan's tweet about taking time away from his role as CMO to spend time with family was also very popular.

Unsurprisingly, Ireland's most popular hashtag this year was #Covid-19/#coronavirus, followed closely by #GolfGate, #Brexit and #BlackLivesMatter.

The most talked about sport star in Ireland this year was Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, followed closely by Conor McGregor and Rashford's United teammate Paul Pogba.

The most mentioned Twitter handle across the world was @realDonaldTrump.
