Police hunt middle-aged Irishman after man suffered ‘serious facial injuries’ in Edinburgh attack

UPDATE: Police have now arrested a 54-year-old man in connection with the incident as of Thursday afternoon.

POLICE in Edinburgh have released an image of an unknown Irishman they want to speak to in connection with a serious assault outside a bar.

The incident took place at about 7.50pm on Saturday, February 3 near to the Phoenix Bar on Broughton Street in the city centre.

A 51-year-old man was assaulted and sustained serious facial injuries.

Investigators are looking to trace the man pictured and have asked anyone who recognises him to contact them immediately.

The man who spoke with an Irish accent is described as being white, in his fifties, 5ft 8ins tall, and of slim build.

He was wearing glasses, a dark jacket and had a scarf around his neck.

Detective constable Andy Cory said: "This attack left the victim with serious injuries and officers have conducted a number of enquiries since the incident.

"I would ask anyone who recognises the man pictured, or has information that can help us trace him, to contact us immediately.

"Equally if the man pictured sees this appeal we would urge him to contact officers as soon as possible."
