IT SEEMS British Prime Minister is afraid to visit Rathlin Island for fear that some people will not let him leave.
David Cameron was taking questions from his Government during Prime Minister’s Questions in Westminster on Wednesday.
When North of Ireland MP Ian Paisley Junior’s turn came around, he took the opportunity to extend an invite to Mr Cameron to visit the tiny Rathlin Island.
“No British Prime Minister has ever had the honour to visit that part of Ulster.
“I wonder when the Prime Minister plans to visit this remote location, which has considerable economic needs and could generate more employment and tourism.”
Rathlin Island is about six miles off the coast of Ballycastle, Co. Antrim and home to a permanent population of about 135 people.
The island is growing in popularity with tourists, with two ferry crossings a day in peak season.
While Mr Cameron took the suggestion on board, he joked that he may never leave the island if he went there.
“I’m the first British Prime Minister to visit many parts of our country, the first to go to Shetland for about 30 years,” he said.
“But I fear if I went to this island there might be a number of people who’d like me to stay there, but I’ll certainly bear it in mind the next time I visit the Province.”
