Irish GAA player killed in Kent road traffic accident - police appeal for witnesses

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an Irish student was killed in a road traffic accident in Kent.

Philip Ganly died after being hit by a lorry last Thursday.

The student, who was on the Westmeath minor football team last season, was crossing the A2 near Canterbury when the accident occurred.

Mr Ganly was from Drumraney and had recently moved to Britain to attend University.

Kent Police said they received a call at 12.25am on October 31st to attend an accident on the A2, inbound to London.

They said “a man was in collision with a white Renault HGV prior to Wincheap slip road. The victim was declared dead at the scene.”

Kent Police told The Irish Post they want to speak with the driver of a lorry believed to be carrying building materials, to help them with they’re enquiries.

In Westmeath, Maryland GAA club flew its flag at half-mast.

A message on the club’s Facebook page read: “A dark cloud descended over Drumraney as the shocking news of Philip's passing spread among his friends and teammates.

"No one wanted to believe it at first, how could such a great young man with such a bright future be taken from us so soon? He could lighten the mood in any situation and make anyone smile.

"Philly was an extremely popular young man who made friends everywhere he went and will be missed by everyone he met. Words can't describe how we all feel.

"Taken too soon from us. Our prayers are with your family. You'll never be forgotten, always be a Maryland Star. RIP Philip Ganly."

Mr Ganly is survived by his parents, Michael and Mary, brother, James, and sister Laura.

A funeral date has yet to be set, although Mr Ganly’s parents are believed to have travelled to Britain this week.
